Writing 101, celebrating 3 special songs

Posted: June 5, 2014 in Writing 101

Three songs which mean something to me:

Song one: My Way – Frank Sinatra

This song is just epic. It is one of the most well-known songs globally and is frequently sung on Karaoke. I enjoy watching other people’s attempts around the world to sing this. There have been many covers and many different versions.

It was my grandfather’s song at his funeral many years ago, and although I didn’t know him a great deal, it was my first realisation of how powerful this song is.

The lyrics are very special to me and I sing it a lot, especially in my car with copious amounts of feeling and energy. Probably too much. People must think I’m a lunatic!

“For what is a man, what has he got? If not himself, then he has naught. To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels The record shows I took the blows and did it my way!”

It’s one of my life’s beliefs to say what I truly feel, and I know it isn’t always the best thing to do, yet I’d like to always call a spade a spade rather than pretending it is something it isn’t.

Song two: Mr Cellophane (From the musical Chicago)

This song makes me grin, smile, laugh, giggle and… reflect!

It appears sometimes that people don’t know I’m here. This is my own fault as I am a bit of a shrinking violet who hates to be the centre of attention. I get embarrassed when the focus is on me. Those who know me might find that odd since I chose to go into the teaching profession 11 years ago!

So this song is a little kick up my own backside. It’s my own personal dig at ME!

The last line “I hope I haven’t taken up too much of your time.” Just fab.

Song three: More than Words – Extreme

This song has been a killer for me for years. Without getting too soppy here, I think it focusses on the words ‘I love you’. These words are so easily said by some people, who may not necessarily mean it. Of course many people who do say ‘I love you’ do say it because they mean it, but ‘More than words’ is expressing love in a better way than those three little words.

Saying I love you can become meaningless. It is thrown about to easily and people think it can fix everything.

Well, not for me. When I say it, I mean it. And to emphasise the point, I like my actions to speak louder than the words.

That’s my interpretation of the song and it might be wrong.

And it’s also a beautiful song. However, one I cannot sing too well. Too many high notes!

So, there are three songs pertinent to me. WOW, there are so many which I could’ve put on this list…..

I might even struggle to get it down to 20!

  1. I’ve always been partial to My Way. I do enjoy something that celebrates not kowtowing to what others want, and this I think fits that nicely.

Reminds me of this quote: “Don’t go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail” – Ralph Waldo Emerson.

    Thanks for sharing 🙂
